Lucky 15 Bet Explained

A Lucky 15 is a full-cover bet on four selections in four different events, turned into 15 separate bets. It includes 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 fourfold accumulator, and a £1 Lucky 15 costs £15 in total. The lure of the bet is the possibility of getting something back if just one selection wins, even if that return does not cover the original stake.

What the bet contains

A Lucky 15 starts with four choices in four different contests. Every possible combination of them is then covered, with each bet treated separately:

  • 4 singles, one on each selection
  • 6 doubles, covering every pair of selections
  • 4 trebles, covering every group of three
  • 1 fourfold accumulator, combining all four

Each single stands on its own, while every double, treble and the fourfold need all of their selections to win. The four selections must be in different events, and the bet can be used on other sports as well as racing.

What it costs and how returns work

A £1 stake means backing 15 different bets at £1 each, so a £1 Lucky 15 is £15 to place in total, which can surprise new punters. Whatever the unit stake, the total outlay is that stake multiplied by 15, so a £2 Lucky 15 costs £30 and a £5 Lucky 15 costs £75. Checking the total outlay, not just the unit stake, before confirming the bet avoids that surprise.

Because the singles are included, one winning selection is enough for some return. That return depends on the odds of the winner, and it may be less than the total stake. With two or more winners the doubles start to pay as well, and the more selections that win, the more of the 15 bets come into play; the fourfold pays only if all four selections win.

The downside is that the stake multiplies with the number of bets, so a Lucky 15 costs far more than a single bet at the same unit stake. It is not extra value, but it gives more coverage for the stake.

Each-way Lucky 15s and operator extras

An each-way Lucky 15 doubles the number of bets from 15 to 30, because every bet has a win part and a place part. At £1 a bet it costs £30, twice the win-only version, so the outlay rises quickly. The place parts can bring some money back when selections are placed rather than winning, but the total stake is still twice as large before any race has been run.

The bet is popular in UK horse racing, and some bookmakers add their own bonuses or consolation odds when only one selection wins. These are operator promotions rather than part of the bet itself, and they vary, so they are not a built-in feature to count on. The structure of the bet itself, and its cost, stays the same wherever it is placed.
