The new cap system
The new limits apply two different caps to players, depending on age. Adults aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 on a single spin. Adults in the 18 to 24 age band are kept to a much tighter maximum of £2 per spin. These are maximums, so operators cannot offer either group a higher stake per spin.
The two limits started on different dates:

Because the right limit depends on age, operators must check a player's age to apply it. Placing a customer in the wrong age band would mean applying the wrong maximum stake, so the age check is central to how the rules work in practice. For players, the practical effect is simple: a stake above the permitted level for their age should not be accepted on an online slot.
Where the rule came from
It was the government's decision, not the gambling industry's, to put in place the maximum stakes. The limits were introduced by the government after the 2023 gambling white paper, which set out a range of changes to gambling regulation in Great Britain. They now form part of the rules for every operator licensed in Great Britain that offers online slots.
The lower limit gives younger adults a tighter cap than older players, and both limits apply to everyone in the relevant age band. A player's spending history or income does not change which limit applies; only age does.
What the limits cover
The starting point is that this change is about online slots, not a general spending cap. The limits apply to online slot games offered by operators licensed in Great Britain. They do not apply to land-based machines in arcades, betting shops or casinos, which have their own separate limits.
This distinction matters for anyone comparing the two. A rule that governs a slot game on a phone or computer does not automatically carry over to a machine on the high street, and the reverse is also true, so the online limits should not be read as a guide to what a land-based machine allows.
